Brazil, 1977. On the run, Marcelo (Wagner Moura) returns to his hometown of Recife where he is welcomed into a covert community of refugees presided over by aging matriarch Dona Sebastiana.
He takes a job in an Identification Records Office, partly as cover and partly to seek out a record of his mother’s life, yet soon becomes entangled in a web of espionage, conspiracy and murder involving the corrupt local police chief who knows more about Marcelo’s past than he lets on.
