The Matchmaker by John B. Keane
Presented by CTD (City Theatre Dublin)
The Matchmaker follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O Connor, to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn the 1960’s.
Using his inimitable way with words and his one sense of “devilment” and wit, John B. Keane delves into the longings, hungers, fears and foibles of this collection of lonely country people creating a marvellously colourful world, taking us back to a simpler time, when phones were few and far between and the only web was one left behind by spiders.
Jon Kenny and Norma Sheahan play a myriad of characters in search of love, companionship and satisfaction.
Update: Thursday, April 4th
Due to illness, Jon Kenny will be unable to perform as planned in The Matchmaker on Friday, April 5th. This has arisen at very short notice and he greatly regrets not being able to take to the stage.
The producers of the play have secured the actor Denis Conway to replace Jon for the performance. Denis recently played Thomasheen Sean Rua in the Gaiety production of Sive opposite Norma as Mena, so they are both very well placed to give equally excellent performances in The Matchmaker. Emer O’Kelly in the Sunday Independent said of the two, “Norma Sheahan as the scheming, embittered Aunt Mena and Denis Conway as sly and scurrilous matchmaker Thomasheen Seán Rua pretty well wipe the stage floor with any competition.”
