In 1970, Massachusetts, unemployed carpenter J.B. (Josh O’Connor) lives with his wife Terri (Alana Haim) and their two young sons. In an ill-conceived bid to turn around his ailing fortunes, J.B. plans to rob a local modern art gallery, and while he escapes with a cache of Arthur Dove paintings, events quickly conspire against him, and he is forced to go on the run.

Reichardt’s idiosyncratic approach to storytelling is a surprisingly good fit for this gorgeously autumnal, melancholic heist movie which swiftly dispenses with the crime to focus on its aftermath. A character study of a man whose failure as a thief is matched by poor decision making in his private life, J.B. is redolent of the unconventional antiheroes that populated the New Hollywood on the ‘70s, an era towards which Reichardt’s elegiac film nods.
