Fatherland IFI@Belltable
Pawel Pawlikowski | 82mins | Poland-Germany-Italy-France | 2026 | 12A | Subtitles
Fatherland, a perfectly formed miniature – of a piece with Pawlikowski’s Ida and Cold War – is set in 1949 when Nobel prize-winning German writer Thomas Mann is being feted in east and west Germany. Joining him is daughter and assistant Erika (Sandra Hüller), whose supportive yet challenging presence gradually breaches the edifice her imposing father has built around him.
A miracle of economy, Fatherland blends a complex portrait of post-war European political and cultural concerns into its tightly focused father-daughter drama.
