A biopic of the titular jazz pianist, Grant Gee’s elliptical film begins after Evans’s stint in Miles Davis legendary quartet in the ’50s, and before his comeback in the ’80s. Bereaved from the death of his bass player, Bill (Anders Danielsen Lie) stays with his brother (Barry Ward) before his escalating drug use forces him to abandon NYC to detox with parents (Bill Pullman and Laurie Metcalf) in Florida. Mark O Halloran’s ingenious script shuffles the chronology of the story to hugely satisfying effect.
